On February 22, 2010, I attended a lunch at Hudson Alpha sponsored
by the Schools Foundation. Major General James Myles, Commander
of Redstone Arsenal, spoke about a "Strategic Economic
Development Vision for BRAC." Maj Gen Myles spoke at length about
Education and said "Education is Economic Development." He
encouraged us to play a "Home Game" by growing up our work force
right here at home versus hiring them and bringing them from
somewhere else which he characterized as an "Away Game." He
stressed that the influx of students associated with BRAC is expected
to be high. Finally, he asked three important questions:
(1) Are we doing things right?
(2) Are we doing the right things?
(3) What are we missing?
Maj Gen Myles' remarks are a call to action. I am committed to
meeting the Education needs of our growing military and civilian
community. I will bring my experiences as a former military member,
as an attorney and business owner, and as a committed mother of
public school children to bear as we address the issues.
